Spearer Mantis Shrimp Eyes and Antennae Emerging From Sand Burrow in Bali
Media added to your Request List
An extreme macro underwater photograph captures a low-angle view of a spearer mantis shrimp (Lysiosquillina maculata or Lysiosquilla species) emerging from its vertical burrow in dark volcanic sand in Bali. The specialized burrowing stomatopod exposes its large, iridescent compound eye stalks featuring fine white speckling, dark central ommatidial bands, and golden metallic sheen. Extending to the right from the burrow opening are long, translucent, banded antennal flagella and delicate sensory appendages scanning the water column. The surrounding seabed consists of fine, multi-colored volcanic sediment, black basalt grains, and tiny iron-red sand particles. A very shallow depth of field pins absolute focus onto the large compound eyes and detailed ommatidial structure, while the foreground and background sediment soft-focus into smooth bokeh. Ideal for stomatopod sensory biology, ocular morphology guides, marine ecology publications, and professional nature stock media.
