Pleocyemata

Pleocyemata is a major suborder of decapod crustaceans that includes true shrimps, lobsters, crayfish, hermit crabs, and true crabs, unified by female brooding where eggs are carried attached to the pleopods (swimmerets) until hatching. Inhabiting diverse marine ecosystems from tropical coral reefs to deep-sea abyssal zones, these ecologically vital invertebrates display specialized appendages, hard chitinous exoskeletons, and complex behaviors.
