Brachycera
Brachycera is a major suborder of the order Diptera, encompassing the majority of flies like houseflies, horseflies, and bee flies. They are easily distinguished by their short, stout antennae which typically feature fewer than six segments and often bear a specialized bristle called an arista. Most species possess highly adapted, sponging or piercing mouthparts designed for liquid feeding. Their larvae, commonly known as maggots, play a vital ecological role by acting as crucial decomposers in various environments.
