Long-Arm Octopus Sprawled Across Dark Volcanic Sand in Bali

A high-magnification macro underwater photograph captures an overhead, top-down perspective of a small long-arm octopus (Abdopus or Macrotritopus species, such as Abdopus aculeatus or Octopus kaurna) sprawling across a dark volcanic sand seabed in Bali. The master of camouflage displays a mottled olive-brown and beige mantle covered in raised skin papillae and pale speckles, matching the surrounding volcanic silt and gravel. Its eight slender, elongated arms stretch outward across the dark sand, revealing rows of small white suckers along the undersides as it foragingly probes the substrate. Elevated eye stalks with reflective, pale irises look upward and forward. The multi-colored volcanic sand, interspersed with tiny black basalt grains and red mineral flecks, provides direct context for the cephalopod’s benthic microhabitat. A shallow depth of field pins crisp focus on the mantle papillae, central head, and suction cups while softly blurring the outstretched arm tips. Ideal for octopod behavioral studies, dermal papillae and camouflage morphology guides, cephalopod ecology textbooks, and professional nature stock media.
