Juvenile Black Frogfish Navigating Volcanic Sand and Rubble in Bali

A high-magnification macro underwater photograph captures a side-profile view of a tiny juvenile black frogfish (Antennarius species, such as a black morph painted frogfish Antennarius pictus or striated frogfish Antennarius striatus) navigating a dark volcanic sand seabed in Bali. The small, jet-black anglerfish features a textured, velvety dermal coating dotted with microscopic specks. It uses its specialized leg-like pectoral and pelvic fins to perch on and walk across coarse volcanic sediment, multi-colored pebbles, and scattered reef rubble. A tiny, distinct eye with a golden-ringed iris stands out against its dark body, while a delicate ilium and esca (lure) rest tucked forward above its downturned mouth. A shallow depth of field keeps the frogfish’s body, eye, and limb-like fins in sharp focus while softly blurring the foreground and background volcanic substrate. Ideal for antennariid juvenile development guides, camouflage and benthic locomotion studies, marine biology publications, and professional nature stock media.
