Perissodactyla

Perissodactyla is an order of mammals characterized by odd-toed ungulates, meaning they walk on an odd number of toes with the middle toe bearing most of the weight. This group includes modern animals like horses, rhinoceroses, and tapirs. Unlike even-toed ungulates, they are hindgut fermenters, digesting plant cellulose in their large intestines rather than a multi-chambered stomach. While diverse in the prehistoric era, only a few species of these large herbivores survive today.
